Raise your hand if you’re looking forward to a rousing game of Pictionary over the holidays? Every year I think I’m going to find a new game to try out on Christmas Day but we always come back to our white board and dry erase markers. I’m a horrible artist but that only makes it more fun, right?
I love board games and I’ll venture to bet you do too. Maybe it’s not Pictionary? Then perhaps it’s you and your family-by-friendship laughing till you cry playing Cards Against Humanity.
I am guessing for some of you, Christmas Eve or Day wouldn’t be the same without then entire clan gathered around the kitchen table for a Monopoly marathon. (Except for your brother who quits in the first 15 minutes when he decides it’s impossible for him to win.)
If game night is part of your holiday experience I am guessing so are the snacks. I don’t want you to miss out or feel left out. You can enjoy a treat and you can make better choices. While it is really about THE GAME, you can come up with healthier ways to nosh and make room for a piece of peanut butter fudge. There are plenty of better for you finger foods you can enjoy with your friends and family that won’t make them go “Ewww, what’s that?”. Here’s your ultimate how-to guide to a healthier holiday game night.
Monopoly – Be prepared for the long haul with the perfect cup of sipping cocoa using chocolate tea with a splash of coconut milk and hint of stevia. You can nibble these Peppermint Meringues from SkinnyTaste.com if you need a cookie and drop a couple in your cocoa in place of marshmallows.
Yahtzee – My favorite educational game! You can learn math and poker at the same time! It moves fast so one piece of Tosca Reno’s Banana Zucchini Loaf should last you almost the entire game.
Pictionary – Our family favorite is perfect with date balls. Since you’re up moving around, perhaps tapping the board and gesticulating wildly, date balls will give you a little energy while satisfying your sweet tooth. Try any of the ones on my Protein Bars and Bites Pinterest board.
Cards Against Humanity – If you’ve never played this game a word of warning – adults only! It pairs perfect with something spicy. I suggest wasabi peas, roasted smoked paprika chickpeas from Rebecca at Strength & Sunshine or these Hot & Sour Celery Pickles from Vegetarian Times.
Movie Bingo – You can find printable bingo cards on Pinterest to take movie night to a whole new level! Watch Christmas Vacation or Elf while snacking on air-popped popcorn. Give it a kick with pink sea salt or espresso salt. Want a healthier soda alternative? Try Zevia (I have a weakness for the ginger ale) or Simple Balanced Sparkling Water (go for the Ginger Peach).
Holiday game night is a tradition that should never die. If it isn’t part of your holiday tradition, maybe it’s time to start. You can really get to know someone based on his Monopoly strategy.
What’s your holiday game night like? What new game would you love to try?
